Preparing for Inclement Weather this Winter

Subject: Preparing for Inclement Weather this Winter

Dear BCCS Families,

The winter season is in full swing and I wanted to take this opportunity to remind everyone of our inclement weather protocols. While we want school open on every scheduled instructional day, the safety of our students and staff is our top priority. Our goal is to communicate weather-related decisions to you as soon as possible so you can make plans in a timely manner.

In the event of inclement weather and based on information provided by the National Weather Service and our Transportation Department, here are our following options:

Option #1: Close School Completely

If Brooklyn Center Community Schools are closed all day, all ECFE programs, Centaur Plus, Centaur Beginnings, Centaur Preschool will be closed and after-school activities will be canceled.

Option #2: Switch from In-Person Learning to a “Learning from Home” Day

At the discretion of the superintendent, Brooklyn Center Community Schools could switch from in-personal learning to a “learning from home” day due to inclement weather. This decision will be made and communicated with staff with the utmost of urgency so you can quickly make plans for an e-learning day.

Option #3: Dismiss School Early

If Brooklyn Center Community Schools announces an early dismissal, buses will follow regular return routes. Students will either ride the bus home or wait for a designated adult to pick them up. Centaur Plus, Centaur Beginnings, and Centaur Preschool program leaders will communicate separately with their families with additional pick-up instructions.

Option #4: Cancel after school activities, events, and out-of-school programming

Decisions to cancel after school and evening activities will be made before 3 p.m. and promptly communicated. This decision will be made by the Superintendent in consultation with other district officials.

Families can expect the following communications in the event of inclement weather:

Phone call, email, text message from our mass notification system

Announcements will be posted on the district website newspage, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter

Announcements will also be shared with the following local media: KSTP-TV, Channel 5; WCCO-TV, Channel 4; KMSP-TV, Channel 9; KARE-TV, Channel 11. These media outlets post School Closings on their respective websites.
