Preceding the fifth vote taken by the Minnesota House of Representatives and Senate to attempt to end Gov. Tim Walz’s continued emergency powers, state Rep. Joe McDonald (R-Delano) voiced his opposition to Walz’s ongoing powers, calling on his Democrat colleagues to support the vote.
Though the Republican Party controls the state Senate, and have been able to reject some of Walz’s appointments, they have lacked the power in the House of Representatives to end Walz’s emergency powers.
In urging his fellow representatives to join the Republicans in their vote, McDonald stated on his official Facebook page that the state has operated for too long with the checks and balances needed for representative government.
“Let's get our state back to the representative system of government on which it was founded instead of having one person make all the decisions,” McDonald posted to Facebook. “Praying for (but not counting on) House Democrats to finally understand that and join today's effort to end the governor's unilateral rule and restore the Legislature as a co-equal branch of government that it is.”
