Firefighterpic

City Of Edina issued the following announcement on June 19.

The Edina Fire Department was called to the 5100 block of Lincoln Drive at 5:12 a.m. Sunday, June 14, after the occupants reported a fire in the basement.

Fire crews arrived to discover smoke coming from the townhome. Thanks to the quick notification and response, the fire was contained to the basement dryer and was swiftly extinguished after crews arrived. The townhome sustained smoke damage. There were no injuries.

The cause of the fire is related to the clothes dryer.

“It’s important to regularly inspect appliances to make sure they are clean and in working order and also to get gas appliances inspected annually by a professional,” said Fire Marshal Rick Hammerschmidt. “However, it’s even more important that smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are tested monthly. The townhome’s smoke alarms weren’t working, but thankfully the occupants were awake, smelled the smoke and were able to exit the home quickly and call 911.”

The Edina Fire Department received mutual aid from the Hopkins, Richfield and St. Louis Park fire departments. The Edina Police Department also assisted with the call.
