City Of Golden Valley issued the following announcement on Dec. 31.
As we get deeper into winter, Minnesotans are often tempted to go outside and venture onto frozen lakes and ponds (walking, skiing, skating, etc). For safety purposes, the City asks residents to use caution when walking or traveling on frozen bodies of water, or better yet avoid them all together.
Ice is never 100 percent safe. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) recommends checking ice thickness every 150 feet. The DNR also recommends to check the temperature, not the calendar. Air temperature and recent weather patterns can drastically affect ice thickness even in the colder months like January and February.
Learn more about general ice safety on the DNR website and remember, when in an emergency, always call 911.
