NORTH HENNEPIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE: NHCC Introduced New Course African American Civil Rights Immersion Experience

Education

North Hennepin Community College issued the following announcement on Nov. 5.

NHCC introduced a new course this fall, African American Civil Rights Immersion Experience, to provide students with an up-close immersive experience of some of the events, places, people and systems throughout the United States that have helped shape and define contemporary African-American theories.

As part of the curriculum, 40 students traveled on a bus for six nights to five states and visited Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s childhood home, Tuskegee University, Mike Brown’s memorial in Ferguson, Kelly Ingram Park, the 16th Street Baptist Church, Brown Chapel and more.

Students shared that they learned a lot about their families and themselves, and a few expressed interest in attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities after this experience.
