Representative Danny Nadeau of Rogers, Minnesota has issued a statement following a shooting that resulted in the deaths of former Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark. The incident also left Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette hospitalized.

In his statement, Nadeau said, “Like so many across Minnesota, I’m heartbroken and deeply shaken by the violence that occurred this morning. My heart aches for my colleagues and their families, and I’m heartbroken for our world. Melissa Hortman and John Hoffman were dedicated public servants who were passionate about serving their communities and the people of this state.

The consequences of threats, intimidation, and the violent rhetoric that’s accepted and encouraged in the political environment today are severe, sad, and unacceptable. We must never forget that an attack on one lawmaker is an assault on each of us and the very foundation of our society.

I’m grateful for the first responders and law enforcement officers working to protect the public and locate the individual responsible for this act. As we wait for more information, I urge all Minnesotans to set aside division and recommit to treating one another with decency and respect regardless of our differences.”

Nadeau's remarks come as authorities continue to search for the person responsible for the shooting. He called on Minnesotans to remain united during this time.
