BCCS Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Sept. 15 - Oct. 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month. It is often extended to Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month, and while Hispanic and Latinx identities can overlap, the two words mean separate things. The term “Hispanic” refers to those who have ancestral roots in Spain or Spanish-speaking countries. The term “Latinx” refers to those who have ancestral roots in Latin American countries.

This month is a time to honor and celebrate the unique histories, traditions, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic and Latinx Americans. Hispanic Heritage Month begins in the middle rather than the start of September because it coincides with national independence days in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico, Chile, and Belize.

Our BC family is composed of people with various identities, stories, and perspectives who enrich the community, and this month we want to invite our Hispanic and Latinx students, staff, and families to share more about themselves and their backgrounds. So, to our Hispanic and Latinx community: what does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you? What would you like people to know about your background? Will you be celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month? How would you like to be celebrated by others? Let us know by emailing communications@bccs286.org and we will share with our BC community.

Join us in celebrating this month with a dance party! A dance instructor will be teaching a variety of Latin dances on Oct. 14 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at Brooklyn Center Middle and High School STEAM. There will also be craft activities, light snacks, and refreshments.
