At Brooklyn Center Community Schools, we know that each of our students has dreams and aspirations. They have ideas and interests that fuel everything they do. Through this campaign called This Is My BC, we take a look at how BC helps students pursue their potential.
One of Latoria Bryant’s goals for her senior year has been to find her voice. Through her interests and her activities at school, she has been able to grow her passions and better articulate who she is and what she stands for.
Bryant is a senior at Brooklyn Center Middle and High School STEAM, and has been a part of Brooklyn Center Community Schools since she was in the sixth grade. One of her earliest memories from her time at BCCS was her very first middle school teacher who made her feel immediately welcomed as a new student to Brooklyn Center Middle and High School STEAM. “He helped me get accustomed when I was new here in 6th grade and helped me get out of my shell and showed my personality,'' said Bryant. “We have remained close and he still helps me with things even now!”
In her time at BCCS, Bryant has always felt welcomed and valued by students and staff alike. “The students are very open minded and allow me to show them my ways of my culture,” said Bryant. “It makes me want to learn even more about my culture than I know now.”
In school, Bryant particularly enjoys art class, which has been her favorite for many years. “I love being able to be heard through my art,” said Bryant. “Art lets you put all of your emotions on a single canvas and express yourself.” Bryant’s art teacher is a valuable influence in her life, and helps guide the exploration of self in art. “She helps me with my artistic voice as I am still in the learning process of getting into my art,” said Bryant.
During her time at BCCS, Bryant has also been active with the Young Persons are Represented (YAPR) group, activating peers to let their voice be heard on critical issues that face them as students and members of their community. With this group of like-minded students, Bryant has helped lead peaceful protests, participate in a student-led walk out, and work closely with their staff liaison to discuss important issues that face students in school. “We are all students who want to bring change into the school,” said Bryant. “This program helps us let our voices be heard.”
Another passion of Bryant’s is helping and volunteering with the elderly. She has a few elderly couples that live on her street and she always tries to help them with yard work and tasks around the house when she can. “I don’t want anyone to ever feel like they need to do more than they can handle when I am capable and willing to help them out,” said Bryant.
When Bryant is not in school, you can find her studying, working or hanging out with her friends. She has recently become interested in making her own clothes, which takes up a lot of her free time as she learns a new hobby. Additionally she spends a lot of her time reflecting on her personal voice and style and how she can represent herself well as she transitions into her post-high school life. “I am currently trying to figure out my art style and my talent, to get my voice out there and let people see that I am here and represent myself well,” said Bryant.
After graduation this Spring, Bryant plans to take a gap year and travel to expand her horizons. She wants to pursue a career in acting and modeling, and is already a part of a talent company that she has been working with for the last year. After her gap year, Bryant plans to attend college and study psychology and musical arts.
