Brooklyn Center Community Schools: THIS IS MY BC: ALEXANDER GARDUÑO GARCIA

90

Brooklyn Center Community Schools issued the following announcement on March 15.

At Brooklyn Center Community Schools, we know that each of our students has dreams and aspirations. They have ideas and interests that fuel everything they do. Through this campaign called This Is My BC, we take a look at how BC helps students pursue their potential.

“How you do one thing is how you do everything,” said Brooklyn Center High School senior Alexander Garduño Garcia. “That’s my personal motto.” For Alexander, accomplishing his goals in school, extracurriculars, and his personal interests is what drives him to succeed.

At the start of the pandemic during remote learning, Alexander decided he wanted to learn to play the guitar. He took to YouTube to teach himself, and fast forward two years, he has connected with some of his classmates over that interest.

“BC is obviously very diverse, and teaches a lot about other cultures, including music,” he said. “Everyone is very open and encouraging about all sorts of different interest areas.”

In addition to his newfound guitar hobby, Alexander has played soccer for the last five years, the last two of which he has served as the team captain. He has also been actively involved in the Brooklyn Youth Council, a group made up of students from different schools who address issues in their community. This year, they have been working on a college and career guide packet to distribute to students. The guide has a clear outline of steps and tips for students who are planning to apply for college or pursue trade school plans.

Another influential activity for Alexander has been his involvement in the TRIO Upward Bound program, which has helped him with college readiness and preparation. From assistance on learning about scholarship opportunities to help prepare for applications and interviews, the program has been crucial for Alexander in his journey to success at the collegiate level.

In talking about his own plans after graduation, he notes how open and accepting BCCS is from the perspective of student success, and what that looks like for each individual student. “The community at BC is very open in regard to what they push students to do,” he said. “They want to open doors for students regardless of if that is college, trade school, or even a gap year. Mentors help students decide what is the smartest decision for that individual.”

One personal journey for Alexander lately has been reading the book “Can’t Hurt Me” by David Goggins, a book that talks about how to gain mental strength and perseverance and overcome challenges that life throws at you. “This book has been very insightful for me during this time in my life,” he said.

Alexander’s personal fuel to achieve success in his life has taken him far at BCCS, and he has no plans to stop now. After graduation, he hopes to attend college and study computer science, using the foundation that BCCS laid for him to continue to succeed.
