The Minnesota Senate voted in favor of letting school district decide the model they think is best suited to use when school starts up again in the fall.
In the resolution approved by the Senate, Gov. Tim Walz wouldn't be allowed to make the sole decisions for schools on whether to open or close, according to a press release from the Minnesota Senate Republican Caucus.
“Our local school boards know what is best for our students and teachers,” Sen. Bruce Anderson (R-Buffalo) said in the press release. “As Gov. Walz weighs whether or not he should mandate school closures, this resolution is a reminder that our local leaders can determine the best practices for our communities.”
Reopening schools is also important for the well-being of children, according to the American Association of Pediatrics (AAP).
“The AAP strongly advocates that all policy considerations for the coming school year should start with the goal of having students physically present in school. The importance of in-person learning is well-documented, and there is already evidence of the negative impacts on children because of school closures in the spring of 2020," the Association said in the press release.
