North Hennepin Community College: National Poetry Month
0Comments

North Hennepin Community College issued the following announcement on April 13.

In honor of April being National Poetry Month, we’d like to share a student poem. Madison Herold, is a student in Kara Olson’s, Writing Poetry class this semester. Her poem is titled, When it starts.

it’s neutral,

a flat-line moving

forward.

Every time

it’s different.

I never know

how it will start.

This time it starts out going down.

It descends into a cave,

pitch black.

I feel the walls shaking

Rocks tumbling

Loud shrieks above.

It takes a sharp plummet down.

Skin boiling,

Burning, a foul smell of melting flesh.

I look down, my skin is fine.

I hear voices screaming.

My mind is racing.

Then it slowly climbs out of the cave,

A light summer breeze

floats across my skin, as I reach the end,

light engulfs.

The sweet sound of birds hits me,

shortly after the fragrance of spring flowers follows.

Relief painting my face.

It’s neutral again.

A stopping point.

A soft breeze floats

past and surprises

me as I lay down my head

and fall asleep in my bed.
