Cooper High School students participate in student summit
Listening and learning from students has been a priority for Robbinsdale Area Schools during the past few years. Evidence of elevating student voice looks different at each building and often the students themselves determine how it looks.
Recently, students at Cooper High School (CHS) took center stage during a student summit that gave them an opportunity to share their perspectives.
During the two-hour event students discussed their experiences, made suggestions for improvements and offered solutions.
CHS senior Lily Chang said, “Students appreciate having their voices heard and seeing the changes being made at our school that impact everyone.“
The CHS National Honor Society, Student Council, and Spirit Committee worked together to plan and host the Jan. 31 event. Students moderated group discussions among the 130 young people who attended, and will share what they heard with school administration.
The topics were: student and staff relationships, learning and student support, and community. Student moderators use prompts to help promote conversation, and students sign up in advance to participate in the event.
“This is a great way for students to share their voice and for staff to receive feedback on how we are doing,” said Assistant Principal Ned Nelson.
The event was held in January to allow time to implement changes before the end of the school year.
